Cichlasoma labiatum

Scientific name of the blood parrot cichlid
Because the blood parrot is a man-made hybrid it doesn't have a scientific name nor will it be given one.

What is the natural habitat like for this fish.
The parrot cichlid doesn't have a natural habitat. Since man created it. blood parrots should do reasonably well in neutral pH water (7.0) and don't appear to be too picky if the PH is slightly above or below.

How large will they grow?
Parrot cichlids can grow to 8 inches or more and can reasonably live for ten years. Other factors will play a role in how large your fish grow like the amount of fish you have and the size of the tank as well as the amount of free swim space provided.

Tempermant.
Parrot Cichlids for the most part are not aggressive and should not be placed with aggressive tank mates. They are very shy once placed in the tank and may hide if given an object to hide in or behind once they see movement about the tank. This can go on for weeks but eventually they will get used to the movement in fact once they do they will come right up to you and ask for food. I have noticed once they pair up and the female lays her eggs if I put my hand in the tank to replant a plant she will leave her nest and attack me but she is only defending her eggs and she will also ward off all other fish that come to close.
Cichlids seem to unplant any plant that is not secured well to the tanks bottom. They also pickup the gravel in their mouths and move it. This is a behavior that will occur when the male is making nest for the female he has paired up with.

Ethics
I noticed that pet stores sell the parrots at a high price and yet they are also not readily available in many stores due to the difficulty in breeding them.
I do feel, however, that it is unethical for pet stores to sell this fish without informing a potential purchaser that this breed of cichlid is man made and very hard to breed due to the males being mostly sterile.
